Phantom Load

Do you leave your computer on all night sometimes? (I'll admit I've done it before.) Do you leave your DVD player or stereo on when you're not using them? (It's easy to forget to turn them off.) You might be surprised at how much electricity these devices suck up even when they're idle. Turn them off and you'll not only save money on your electric bill, but you'll be helping the environment too!

Better yet, use a power strip whenever possible. That TV upstairs you hardly ever use? It sucks electricity even when it's off. It's called the "phantom load," and some estimates say that up to 40% of a residential electric bill is due to the trickles of electricity devices use even when they're off. So either unplug it, or for more convenience, plug it into a power strip and then all you have to do is flick the switch on the strip instead of reaching behind to plug and unplug.
